UserTest.io Review: Is It A Usability Testing Scam?
Awhile back I wrote a list post of 11 usability testing sites you can make money with. Today I have a new site to review called UserTest.io.
It’s another usability testing website that pays you $10 per test within a few days of completing the test.
If you’re not familiar with usability testing, it’s completing tasks on a website and giving your opinion. To complete a test you’ll need to record your screen and voice, so if you’re not comfortable with that, this is not an opportunity for you. Check out these other ways to make an extra income online!
In this UserTest.io review, I’ll cover how the site works, how you get paid, and a brief overview of getting paid to usability test.
The requirements to apply at Usertest.io are a desktop/laptop and a microphone. It’s okay to use a built-in microphone, but if you do not have one, you’ll need to purchase a headset.
Luckily this is an opportunity that’s available in several countries throughout the world. They have a long list on their website at the bottom of the page under the FAQs.
UserTest.Io Application Process
First, on their website, they clearly state that only 5% of applicants get accepted, but I’m assuming that has to do with allowing applicants from so many countries.
To start the application process visit their website and enter your primary email address. The next step is to complete a sample test. They give you detail instructions and even let you watch an approved sample test. To start the test, download their screen capturing software. Once it’s done downloading it will prompt you to start the 5-minute sample test.
During the test, they’ll give you a few tasks to complete on a website. Make sure to read the tasks, complete them, and give your opinion while navigating the site.
When the test is done, they’ll review it and let you know if you’re approved. I saw someone say it’s usually within a few business days.
Completing Usability Tests
Once your account is approved, you’ll begin to receive emails when usability tests are available. Tests are first come first serve, so it’s important to visit the link and complete the test as soon as possible.
If you get to a test in time, they’ll have a specific set of tasks they’d like you to perform and give your opinion about. It could be, navigate to a certain page of a site or add items in your cart. As you perform these tasks, it’s your job to give your opinion. Keep in mind that your screen and audio is recorded during the whole test, so it’s important to give you opinion as you do tasks.
When you’re done with the set of tasks you can submit your test for approval. Most tests take about 20 minutes to complete and pay you $10. Once your test is approved you’ll be paid within 2 days.
If your test is not approved, it’s usually because you didn’t follow the tasks or poor audio quality. Most sites let you redo the test, but I’m not forsure if UserTest does or not.
How Does UserTest.Io Pay?
UserTest.io pays $10 per 20 minute usability test. You’ll get paid your earnings via PayPal within two days of completing a usability test.
A lot of people see the $10 in 20 minutes and think wow I could make $30 an hour taking these tests, but keep in mind that there’s usually just a few tests available per week so it’s not like you can sit down and take test after test.
Is UserTest.io a Scam?
UserTest.io is not a scam, it’s a legitimate usability testing site that pays its members, and it seems to have good feedback from its current users. As I mentioned, they say on their website that only 5% of applicants get approved, but again I would say a clear English speaking applicant gets approved most of the time.
If you’d like to learn more about the opportunity or to join, visit UserTest.io.
