In this Take 1 Transcription review, I’ll cover the requirements, application process, the pay, and if this transcription site is a scam.

Take 1 Transcription Requirements

Take 1 does not accept complete beginners. They are looking for transcribers with experience, and there’re some strict requirements to apply. Here’re the requirements listed on their website:

  • Audio Typing Experience
  • Typing Speed of 80 WPM
  • Excellent spelling & Grammar Skills
  • Excellent command of oral and written English
  • Good knowledge of current affairs
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Available to work minimum 20 hours a week
  • Good IT Skills

The technical requirements include a PC (You can not use a Mac) and a high-speed internet connection. It doesn’t look like they require it, but most professional transcribers prefer to use a high-quality headset and foot pedal.

If you can meet these requirements, you can begin the application process.

Take 1 Transcription Application

You can start the application process on the Take 1 website. The first step is to enter in your personal/contact information. Next, you’ll enter your typing speed and all of your past transcription experience. After you let them know when you’re available to work, they require you to work at least 20 hours a week, but you can enter as many hours as you’d like and give them an idea of what times of the day you’d like to work. Next, you’ll make sure that you have all the required equipment to perform the job. The last step is to upload your resume and spelling test.

Please note that they only respond if they want to proceed with the application process.

If you do hear back, they conduct an over the phone interview and will install their transcription software on your computer.

If that goes well, you’ll enter a paid training period where you’ll be trained, and all your transcripts are reviewed. They say on their website they’d like you to complete the training within one week. After the training period, you’ll be able to transcribe their live files and can work more freely.

Take 1 Transcription Pay

Take 1 pays around $3.18 per 1000 words transcribed for their basic transcription files. They say that translates to around $.50 per audio minute transcribed.

After the training period, you’ll have access to post production files which usually pay $.75-$1 per audio minute transcribed.

As an independent contractor for Take 1, you’re required to send them a monthly invoice for your work. Invoices are paid a few days after via Direct Deposit.

Take 1 Transcription Schedule

Take 1 requires you to work at least 20 hours a week, but it looks like as long as there’s work available, you can work as much as you want. It does not seem to be a site where you can log on at any time; you’ll have to work within the schedule you set. It is flexible but not as flexible as some other transcription sites.

Is Take 1 Transcription A Scam?

There’s not much feedback about transcribing at Take 1. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a UK based company, but I could not find anything on Glassdoor or in the WAHM forums. My thoughts on this are it’s usually the pissed off people that leave reviews, so it’s not extremely alarming they don’t have any feedback. Either way, it seems to be a legitimate company, but I can’t share the real thoughts on their past and current employees.

  1. I think I will pass this on. I once applied to a different trancription company. The work is hard because at the rate they give for each audio minute, although it sounds like a lot, really is much less, because you have to replay everything over and over until you get it right. Do you know of any other ways to make money by writing online?
