In this SpeakWrite review, I’ll cover the requirements, application, pay, schedule, and if it’s a scam.
SpeakWrite Transcription Requirements
To apply as a transcriber, you’ll need to live in the US or Canada and be fluent in English. You’ll need to be able to type 60 wpm with 90% accuracy to be considered.
For general transcription, you’ll need at least 1-year experience and legal transcription needs at least two years experience in the last five years.
You’ll also need a Windows computer with an updated operating system, Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word, Windows Media Player, a high-quality headset, and a foot pedal.
They will also do a background check that you must pass; they do pay for this. If you can meet the requirements, you can apply.
SpeakWrite Transcription Application
If you meet all the requirements, you can apply on their website. They will review your application, and if they’re hiring, they will get in contact with you.
They require you to complete a simple typing test, provide your work experience, and complete a few transcription samples. They provide a manual for styling that you’ll need to follow during the test.
If all the tests go well, they will complete the background check (again they pay for this.) If you pass the background check, you’ll be hired.
How Much Does SpeakWrite Pay?
SpeakWrite pays it’s writers $.005 per word transcribed. They say on their site that most members can easily make $12-$15 per hour and the most skilled make more.
Just like any other transcription site, your hourly rate depends on your skill and the quality/difficulty of the audio files. Your hourly rate will fluctuate.
How Does SpeakWrite Pay?
Unfortunately, they do not answer this on their site. But I did find in the forums that pay is twice a month via Direct Deposit or PayPal.
SpeakWrite Transcription Schedule
The schedule at SpeakWrite is flexible, you can set your own schedule, but it has to be set in advance. You’ll sign up for 1-hour blocks that can be at any time. You have the ability to set your schedule two weeks in advance.
During your scheduled times they will send you transcription work to complete.
Is Transcribing for SpeakWrite A Scam?
Transcribing for SpeakWrite is not a scam, they’re a reputable company. With that being said, there is plenty of positive and negative feedback. I highly recommend viewing the GlassDoor listing before going through the whole application process.
