iWriter is a freelance writing website where writers can join and pick up writing assignments. Freelance writing isn’t an easy business to get into, especially on freelance writing sites with a lot of competition. For that reason, I decided to write an iWriter review to see if this site is worth joining.
I know that iWriter is not a scam, but in this review, I’ll take a look at the pay rates and see if it meets up with industry standards for freelance writing.
In this review, I’ll cover how iWriter works, how much you can earn, and the concerns I see with this freelance writing job.

How Does iWriter Work?
Joining iWriter
There’re no requirements to join iWriter, which is pretty surprising based on other freelance writing sites. All you need to do is enter your email, and some information and you’re ready to go. There’s no pre-test, once you sign up you can start to pick up writing projects.
Getting Work At iWriter
Once you join, you’ll automatically be given a standard writing rank. This is the lowest level, has the lowest pay, and only has some writing projects available. You can sort open writing projects by category and review the requirements of each writing assignment. It shows the type of article, word count, keyword, and usually some special instructions.
You can claim any work (as long as it’s your level or below) but you must complete and submit your article in the allowed time frame.
After you submit your article, the buyer will review it. They do have the option to deny your article if they feel that it’s of poor quality.
If your article is accepted, your earnings are added to your account balance.
iWriter Levels
Just like most writing websites, iWriter has different levels that affect the type of projects you can pick up and your level of pay.
As mentioned all new members start at a standard level. The next level is called premium. To become a premium writer, you need at least 25 ratings and have a 4.1-star rating or higher.
The next level is Elite; you need 30 ratings and an average of 4.6 stars or higher.
The highest level is Elite Plus; you need 40 ratings and an average of 4.85 stars or higher. Raising your writing level is key to unlocking more writing assignments and higher pay! (I cover the average pay of each level in next section).
How Much Does iWriter Pay?
How much you earn per article has a few different factors, but let me say it’s a pretty low rate. Your pay depends on the number of words the article is, the level of writer you are, and if the buyer specifically requests you to write the article.
For a general rule, most standard level articles pay under $.01 a word; premium level pays around $.01 a word, and elite level usually pays around $.02 a word.
If a writer specifically requests you write the article, you’ll earn a bit of a bonus on the per word rate!
Once you have $20 in earnings you can cash out via PayPal. They have a few different payment options, on the 5th of the month, on the 25th of the month, every Tuesday, or every other Wednesday.
You can switch between settings to cash out as soon as possible.
Just like other freelance websites you’ll need to report this income come tax time if you reach over $600 in earnings.
iWriter Complaints and Concerns
Writing Projects Go Quick
One of the biggest issues with freelance websites, in general, is the level of competition. The number of writers to writing assignments isn’t a good ratio. Just in the time of writing this review nearly all projects that were initially available are gone.
If you’re on the ball, you could make it work, but it’s not going to be easy. Especially when starting as a standard member, since you’re limited to just some projects.
Low Pay
As a standard writer, you’ll be making far less than $.01 a word. At least for your first 20 articles, you’ll be making basically nothing for your time. I guess it gets better as you increase your level, but even at the highest level, a 1,000-word article would be around $20-$30. Honestly to write a great article, do research, and proofread I don’t think it will be a fantastic hourly rate, and that’s for the highest ranked writers.
Just know until you build up your rating you’ll be working for real damn cheap.
Article Denied
This is probably the biggest concern I have. Yes, you can pick up any article (that’s on your level), but the buyer has to approve your article for you to get paid. Just looking through the site most of the buyers have a pretty low approval rate. Here’s a screenshot of one:
As you can see almost 3/4 of the articles submitted to him have been rejected. Now I can’t say all of those articles were terrible or not, but buyers could get around paying you for your work.
I’ve seen a few forums that say a picture of the article is sent to the buyers. They would not be able to copy and paste the text, but they could screenshot it and retype it out.
You just have to hope the buyer is honest and I’d always look for buyers that have a decent approval rating.
Is iWriter A Scam?
iWriter is not a scam if you write high-quality articles and reach the $20 cash out amount you’ll get your money. With that being said, I’m not too excited about this writing website.
I do like the fact you can pick up any article in your level without bidding on the project, but you’re pretty much at the mercy of the buyer once you submit your article.
In my opinion, iWriter isn’t the best freelance website option, but it’s an easy place for a new freelance writer to get started.

Sorry Brok, but this article is no longer true. iWriter indeed is a scam right now. There is no standard article available since days and the only option to proceed on iWriter is to purchased their express package for authors for §147 (WTF???)
This is to screw authors even harder than before and makes the whole site a totally f***ed up scam for an serious author
