GMR Transcription Requirements
GMR Transcription does not require any experience. But they offer their clients a 98% accuracy guarantee, so to maintain those standards, they have a very strict grading policy. Most people who are offered a contract to transcribe for GMR do in fact have experience or have a general transcription certificate.
They also recommend you have a high-quality headset and foot pedal to help you transcribe faster.
GMR Transcription Application Process
Click here if you want to see what positions are currently available with GMR Transcription. When you get there, you will see the open positions, each with a short description. You will click the link that says “Click Here to Apply”.
For the purpose of my review, I am clicking on the link to apply for the General Transcription position that is posted. Here is the information they want:
- Name
- Address (not required)
- Phone
- Are you willing to take a short test (yes or no)
- Type of work desired (this is basically a list of languages, including English to English, Spanish, and French)
- Additional skills
- Highest level of education
- Years of transcribing experience
- Transcription certification (yes or no; if you click yes, it asks the name of the institute through which you earned your certificate)
- Do you own StartStop.com equipment and software (yes or no)
- Last, you need to upload your resume
After clicking submit, you will receive an email with a short test. They make special note to read the instructions carefully before uploading your test file. Here are some of the specific instructions to watch out for:
- They are unable to answer ANY questions. They want people who can troubleshoot problems themselves.
- If you contact them before submitting your test transcript, your application may be immediately rejected.
- If you submit an incomplete transcript or don’t follow the template they provide, your application will be immediately rejected.
- You must complete and submit your test transcript within three days of receiving it.
The email contains a zip file. The zip file contains 4 files. One of the files is the GMR Transcription Test Style Guide. The guide is 12 pages, and contains several “must read” documents within it. Another file is the specific color blue that you are told to use to highlight certain items in your transcript. Remember, you must follow the instructions to the T.
After submitting your test transcript, you will be contacted within 2 weeks if they want to hire you. If you don’t hear back from them, they are not offering you a contract.
What am I getting at? The application and test process will take some time. If you have prior experience, this may be normal and acceptable to you.
How Much Does GMR Transcription Pay?
GMR Transcription does not disclose their pay rates until you are hired. They charge their clients based on the requested turnaround time, the number of speakers, and the audio quality, at a per-minute rate. The pay you get will also depend on all of these factors.
According to reviews on Glassdoor, the typical pay for a GMR typist is $14 per hour. The pay ranged from $10-$20 per hour.
There will be a short probation period when you start. All new typists for GMR will need to complete 2 hours worth of audio before receiving paid work.
GMR Transcription Schedule
GMR Transcription asks that their contractors accept a minimum of 4 hours of audio each month. They claim to have a lot of work available, so if you want to work, you should be work available for you.
They will let you know details of available work, including pay, audio difficulty level, and due date. You can then accept the job if you want it.
GMR Transcription Feedback
Glassdoor reviews are good for GMR Transcription, with 4.4 stars out of 5. Here are the pros and cons.
Pros:
- Always have work available
- You will be made aware of the difficulty level of the audio and the pay scale before accepting a job
- Higher pay rate than most transcription companies

- You can choose your own hours
- Choose how much or how little you work
Cons:
- Someone claimed that you only get 2 mistakes before you get fired
- The company changes the style guide more than once per year
- Some audio files are hard to decipher

You’re correct fast and accurate typing is key when it comes to transcription work.
Not to say that you can transcribe if you’re not a really fast typist, but most sites pay by audio minute which means the faster you transcribe/type the more you’ll earn.
