3 Tips For Becoming a Writer

Writing is one of those careers that everybody thinks they would like to do. Yet it can often seem like it’s an impenetrable career path, one that is inaccessible to most of us. Take it from me that doesn’t have to be the case!

Getting a job writing is not easy, and no one is going to pretend that it is. However, it is much more feasible than many people realize. If you are a passionate and talented writer, with a little perseverance, you can begin writing at home full-time. The following tips should help you to get started.

3 Tips To Becoming A Better Writer

Practice!

There is an old clichéd piece of advice that all writers are sick of hearing – writers write. In other words, the only real requirement to call yourself a writer is to actually write stuff. It is also only by making sure that you write as often as you can that you will be able to improve. If you aren’t writing, you won’t be improving.

It is also not to fall into the mistake of thinking that every time you sit down to write, you must produce a substantial amount of work. When someone is learning to play the guitar, they don’t practice by composing entire albums. Similarly, your writing doesn’t have to consist of writing entire pieces. Writing anything is practice.

Be Realistic

It is important to realize that no matter how passionate you are about writing, making a living writing fiction is incredibly difficult. In fact, if you are able to make a full-time living doing writing of any kind, you are already doing better than most writers ever will.

There is nothing wrong with setting your sights on ultimately writing fiction for a living, but it will take you some time to reach that point. While you are working towards that goal, be prepared to take less glamorous writing jobs. These can range from copywriting for advertising firms to essay writing services.

Be Prepared to Hustle

You won’t be surprised to learn that lots of other people also want to become writers. No matter what job you are going for, whether you are applying for a position or looking to sell your own creative works, you are going to have to be ready to sell yourself to potential employers and publishers.

It is a good idea to keep a portfolio to show to potential employers. Find subjects that interest you and try writing about them in a variety of contexts. If you like gaming, for example, write reviews as well as articles about the industry at large. This will show that you capable of writing for a variety of audiences and circumstances.

Becoming a writer is not an easy journey. Even if you are a great writer who writes every day, it isn’t easy getting your work in front of the right people to turn it into a career. If you want to start making a full-time wage from your writing, be prepared for a battle. You will be competing with many other hopeful writers, and most writers will never break into the big leagues. However, it is a wonderful dream to have and a fantastic journey to go on.
